HOW VALUABLE ARE THE LOWLY IN THE EYES OF JESUS?

To answer this question, I think we have to consider the unconditional love Jesus has for all mankind, who are living by His Grace. In addition to His Grace, It is also pertinent to realise that Jesus goes a step further to pry into all hearts. At this point we can see from the examples of the grumbling disciples as well as the pharisees, how He is able to read their thoughts and cautions them appropriately. When we move beyond this to consider the faiths of the centurion, the samaritan woman at the well, the proverbial widow and her contribution to blindman Bathtimeus, then it presupposes that the "lowly" in this context does not imply only those who are physically poor but embraces all those who are spiritually derranged. For this reason, Jesus is advising us to go beyond our discriminative human boundaries into other  areas to rope in the spiritually deficient personalities with capabilities of being saved and this depends on this personality's exhibition of faith in Jesus.

DOES JESUS LOVE ONLY THE POOR?
i don't think Jesus' highlighting of the lowly implies he loves only that group of people. In fact Jesus is calling all Tom, Dick and HARRY, provided all those called find the need for it.Thus it is quite clear to discern that Jesus called people from all walks of life, from his disciples ( who were local fishermen) to wrong doers like Matthew to knowledgeable peolple like Nichodemus and Paul. Thus his highlighting of the lowly placed in the society only explains and confirms the vunerability of these group of people, who should therefore be given more attention by those in better and advantageous positions. This position He illustrates with that of a naive and innocent child.

What did you learn about Jesus` background that stands out or surprises you?

From the texts provided about the setting or era into which Jesus was born, it seems quite clear that it was an emerging society with so many complexities, particularly with regard to the politics, social values and the economy . It is also clear to observe that there were social classes of diverse forms according to the national origines of the inhabitants.

However, taking a bird's eye view of all these settings I think it's really surprising to learn that the SAVIOUR OF MANKIND appeared in the world at a time of a supposed political stability but with ruthless rulers  like Herod who could order the assassination of a whole male generation. Miraculously, Jesus' life was saved in this ruthless period, and He grew in a humble second class family to suffer the ruthlessness of his own kinsmen despite the wonderful lessons he taught them. The surprising issue therefore is, did God really mean this, ie. placing His beloved Son in a situation of trying hardships just for the sake unreasonable humans or was His timely coming a matter of sheer coincidence? If we consider the answer to this quest which implies the unsatiable love God has for mankind then I  feel how great, surprising and unimaginable  God's Love and Grace is.
