Peter was one of Jesus' twelve disciples chosen at the beginning of His ministry. Peter was a fisherman by trade but Jesus called him to become a "fisher of men". John's biography of Jesus records an interesting story about Peter after the death of Jesus. Peter went back fishing with the disciple John and witnessed a great miracle when Jesus appeared and spoke to them. Jesus also had a conversation with Peter reminding His disciple that he had been called to feed the Lord's sheep, not go back to fishing. You can read the account of this story here. Peter was Andrew's brother. Peter was also referred to as Simon Barjona which means "son of Jonah" (Matthew 16:17). And Peter was called Simon Peter because Jesus changed his name from Simon to Peter which means "rock": "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 18:16). Peter was the disciple who denied Jesus three times, much to his own chagrin. Read that story here. Peter also recognized that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah. See the story here.
