Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

Jesus’ completed work on the cross, the atonement for our sins, was for the purpose of our reconciliation with the Father. He was our substitute, and stood in our place, receiving our punishment voluntarily, suffering the punishment that was “on the books” for us (in the liability column – a debt owed; a very large and unpayable debt).. He paid off our massive account in full and closed the books of our debts: past, present, and future!
But, I’ve never know Him to do credit cards.

Physical and emotional punishment were awaiting each of us. Thus, that was part of the atonement bundled-package He had to accomplish to the satisfaction of the Father, the debtee.
Spiritual separation from God actually is part of  the punishment of the unsaved.
God’s judicial system is not arbitrary or capricious, is without favoritism, and is objectively administered.
 “Fairness” is an ill defined, primarily subjective (emotionally biased) human concept, draped over God’s commandments to dress them up in today’s fashions, and make them more personally appealing, from our human perspective. That is a wrong and dangerous mindset, carnal not spiritual; looking inwardly at self, not outwardly at Christ.

We are fortunate to have the original “Handbook of God’s Judicial System” in our possession and in our native language -- the Holy Bible. It’s the top selling book in the history of mankind – also the least read, according to the experts.
God’s Book is also:
 The Official Handbook on All Relationships (vertical and horizontal);
 The Official Marriage and Family Manual;
 The Official Rules-of-Engagement on ____ “ (you fill in the blank);
 The Official Standards of Conduct Manual;
 The Official Manual on Wisdom, Ethics, Life-Planning for Youths;
 The Office Resources and Answers Book;
 The Official Entrance Exam Guide into Eternity and Life;
 The Official Political and Military Leadership Training Manual on Strategy and Tactics;
 A comprehensive compilation of “Lessons Learned” through failures of nations and individuals (very expensive, but certainly not exclusive: the School of Experience),;
 History, Archeology, Sociology, Biography, Literature, Poetry (even edge-of-your-seat adventure accounts in the OT; romance, intrigue, murder, immoral sexuality, tragedy, comedy, travel, …. The list just goes on and on.),

Shown below, for your reading pleasure, are verses relevant to these issues.  This is a sampling and not a comprehensive listing.

PUNISHMENT involving PAIN:
Rev 9:5  They were not permitted to kill them, but to torment (distress, vex) them for five months; and the pain caused them was like the torture of a scorpion when it stings a person.
Rev 16:10  Then the fifth [angel] emptied his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was [plunged] in darkness; and people gnawed their tongues for the torment [of their excruciating distress and severe pain] [Exod. 10:21.]
Mat 25:46  Then they will go away into eternal punishment, but those who are just and upright and in right standing with God into eternal life. [Dan. 12:2.]
Luk 20:47  Who make away with and devour widows' houses, and [to cover it up] with pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation (the heavier sentence, the severer punishment).
Luk 21:23  Alas for those who are pregnant and for those who have babies which they are nursing in those days! For great misery and anguish and distress shall be upon the land and indignation and punishment and retribution upon this people.
1Co 11:32  But when we [fall short and] are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined and chastened, so that we may not [finally] be condemned [to eternal punishment along] with the world.
Gal 3:10  And all who depend on the Law [who are seeking to be justified by obedience to the Law of rituals] are under a curse and doomed to disappointment and destruction, for it is written in the Scriptures, Cursed (accursed, devoted to destruction, doomed to eternal punishment) be everyone who does not continue to abide (live and remain) by all the precepts and commands written in the Book of the Law and to practice them. [Deut. 27:26.]
1Th 1:10  And [how you] look forward to and await the coming of His Son from heaven, Whom He raised from the dead--Jesus, Who personally rescues and delivers us out of and from the wrath [bringing punishment] which is coming [upon the impenitent] and draws us to Himself [investing us with all the privileges and rewards of the new life in Christ, the Messiah].
2Th 1:9  Such people will pay the penalty and suffer the punishment of everlasting ruin (destruction and perdition) and eternal exclusion and banishment from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
Heb 6:2  With teachings about purifying, the laying on of hands, the resurrection from the dead, and eternal judgment and punishment. [These are all matters of which you should have been fully aware long, long ago.]
Heb 9:22  [In fact] under the Law almost everything is purified by means of blood, and without the shedding of blood there is neither release from sin and its guilt nor the remission of the due and merited punishment for sins.
Heb 10:29  How much worse (sterner and heavier) punishment do you suppose he will be judged to deserve who has spurned and [thus] trampled underfoot the Son of God, and who has considered the covenant blood by which he was consecrated common and unhallowed, thus profaning it and insulting and outraging the [Holy] Spirit [Who imparts] grace (the unmerited favor and blessing of God)? [Exod. 24:8.]
2Pe 2:13  Being destined to receive [punishment as] the reward of [their] unrighteousness [suffering wrong as the hire for their wrongdoing]. They count it a delight to revel in the daytime [living luxuriously and delicately]. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions and carousing together [even] as they feast with you.
Jud 1:7  [The wicked are sentenced to suffer] just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the adjacent towns--which likewise gave themselves over to impurity and indulged in unnatural vice and sensual perversity--are laid out [in plain sight] as an exhibit of perpetual punishment [to warn] of everlasting fire. [Gen. 19.]
Rev 19:2  Because His judgments (His condemnation and punishment, His sentences of doom) are true and sound and just and upright. He has judged (convicted, pronounced sentence, and doomed) the great and notorious harlot (idolatress) who corrupted and demoralized and poisoned the earth with her lewdness and adultery (idolatry). And He has avenged (visited on her the penalty for) the blood of His servants at her hand. [Deut. 32:43.]
Mat 25:41  Then He will say to those at His left hand, Begone from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels! … Mat 25:46  Then they will go away into eternal punishment, but those who are just and upright and in right standing with God into eternal life. [Dan. 12:2.]

JUSTICE OF GOD:
Luk 7:29  And all the people who heard Him, even the tax collectors, acknowledged the justice of God [in calling them to repentance and in pronouncing future wrath on the impenitent], being baptized with the baptism of John.
Luk 21:22  For those are days of vengeance [of rendering full justice or satisfaction], that all things that are written may be fulfilled.
Rom 9:28  For the Lord will execute His sentence upon the earth [He will conclude and close His account with men completely and without delay], rigorously cutting it short in His justice. [Isa. 10:22, 23.]
Heb 10:30  For we know Him Who said, Vengeance is Mine [retribution and the meting out of full justice rest with Me]; I will repay [I will exact the compensation], says the Lord. And again, The Lord will judge and determine and solve and settle the cause and the cases of His people. [Deut. 32:35, 36.]

And as My Father has appointed a kingdom and conferred it on Me, so do I confer on you [the privilege and decree], [Luk 22:29] “..a kingdom…” not “…the kingdom…” implies multiple kingdoms. What’s this about?

"Which of these purposes do you believe Jesus accomplished?"
He accomplished all of them: ..”it is finished.”

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)

NO!

Everything about Jesus’ ministry was a carefully choreographed execution of God’s divine plan of salvation of mankind. Jesus Himself was carefully carrying out a specific role in the divine script.

The impetus of Jesus’ mission was that “.. Scripture be fulfilled…”
“My words shall not return void . . .”

For I tell you that this Scripture must yet be fulfilled in Me: And He was counted and classed among the wicked (the outlaws, the criminals); for what is written about Me has its fulfillment [has reached its end and is finally settled]. [Luk 22:37] [Isa. 53:12.]

I am not speaking of and I do not mean all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, He who eats My bread with Me has raised up his heel against Me. [Joh 13:18] [Ps. 41:9.]

While I was with them, I kept and preserved them in Your Name [in the knowledge and worship of You]. Those You have given Me I guarded and protected, and not one of them has perished or is lost except the son of perdition [Judas Iscariot--the one who is now doomed to destruction, destined to be lost], that the Scripture might be fulfilled. [Joh 17:12] [Ps. 41:9; John 6:70.]

For these things took place, that the Scripture might be fulfilled (verified, carried out), Not one of His bones shall be broken; [Joh 19:36] [Exod. 12:46; Num. 9:12; Ps. 34:20.]

Brethren, he said, it was necessary that the Scripture be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit foretold by the lips of David, about Judas who acted as guide to those who arrested Jesus. [Act 1:16]

And when this perishable puts on the imperishable and this that was capable of dying puts on freedom from death, then shall be fulfilled the Scripture that says, Death is swallowed up (utterly vanquished forever) in and unto victory. [1Co 15:54] [Isa. 25:8.] {refers to the second death, the eternal spiritual death .pdm}

And [so] the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed in (adhered to, trusted in, and relied on) God, and this was accounted to him as righteousness (as conformity to God's will in thought and deed), and he was called God's friend. [Jas 2:23] [Gen. 15:6; II Chron. 20:7; Isa. 41:8.]

Jesus’ Disclaimers of representing Himself, also note that He wasn’t taunting anyone provoking a violent reaction. He was carrying out very specific instructions (no more, no less)

Are You greater than our father Abraham? He died, and all the prophets died! Who do You make Yourself out to be? [Joh 8:53]

{Jesus avoid being baited into a “fleshly” defense of Himself, or self-justification. Proof once again His representation of the Father, not Himself .pdm}

Jesus answered, If I were to glorify Myself (magnify, praise, and honor Myself), I would have no real glory, for My glory would be nothing and worthless. [My honor must come to Me from My Father.]
It is My Father Who glorifies Me [Who extols Me, magnifies, and praises Me], of Whom you say that He is your God. [Joh 8:54]

So Jesus added, When you have lifted up the Son of Man [on the cross], you will realize (know, understand) that I am He [for Whom you look] and that I do nothing of Myself (of My own accord or on My own authority), but I say [exactly] what My Father has taught Me. [Joh 8:28]

{This is very important principal to understand .pdm}.

I am One [of the Two] bearing testimony concerning Myself; and My Father, Who sent Me, He also testifies about Me. [Joh 8:18]

I have come in My Father's name and with His power, . . . [Joh 5:43]
{A man with a mission for another, not of himself .pdm}
… So whatever I speak, I am saying [exactly] what My Father has told Me to say, and in accordance with His instructions. [Joh 12:50]

{Very narrowly defined instructions .pdm}

… I have made known to you everything that I have heard from My Father. [I have revealed to you everything that I have learned from Him.] [Joh 15:15]
{Jesus summarizes His mission goal .pdm}

{When God calls, He empowers for the ministry. Not empowered? Not called .pdm}
Jesus said to them, My Father has enabled Me to do many good deeds. [I have shown many acts of mercy in your presence.] For which of these do you mean to stone Me? [Joh 10:32] {By identifying the source of His authority, He also implies His representation of that same authority .pdm}

{Jesus is voluntarily executing a very precise divine program, on behalf of the Father .pdm}
No one takes it away from Me. On the contrary, I lay it down voluntarily. [I put it from Myself.] I am authorized and have power to lay it down (to resign it) and I am authorized and have power to take it back again. These are the instructions (orders) which I have received [as My charge] from My Father. [Joh 10:18]

{This is an explicit statement .pdm}

The Father in heaven was and is in control of all events, then and now.

Repeating my opening sentence:

Everything about Jesus’ ministry was a carefully choreographed execution of God’s divine plan of salvation of mankind. It is an epic with a cast of millions; make that billions today.

Sleep well tonight - God is in the Command Post, always alert.

If you had a one-on-one meal with Jesus, what would you discuss?

Gosh there would be so many things I would want to know!!

I guess I would start with "What can I fix for you on your plate"

Does everything taste all right and can I get you anything else?!

How about "Thank you so much for coming to eat with me" !!!!

Tell me about your family, what they were like: Brothers, Sisters, mom, dad?

Closest friends as a child?

What was his favorite thing to do growing up? His favorite food?

And most of all his favorite song to sing and can we sing it together?!!

What was it like for you Jesus "to learn to Wait upon the Lord"

Oh how I could go on and On!!!

Love is obediance: Doing what pleases him, what he tells you is love!

As I think on what I would talk about makes me realize all the more how much God was human in the flesh- It connected me so persnally and made me realize how wonderful he is.  What a great friend he is and how honored that we can meet with him anytime any place as long as we ask him, invite him to come as meet with us.

 Oh how I love Jesus, Oh how I love Jesus, Oh how I love Jesus because he first loved me!!!

"Which of these purposes do you believe Jesus accomplished?"

I believe Jesus accomplished all of these purposes!!

Demonstrate Gods Love: He gave his life for us & our sins. he made himself the bridge to God so that we no longer had to sacrifice animals but by his blood being shed (the New Testament) made a way for the cleanising of our sins & to salvation forever!

Bring Good news: Jesus was the living God in the flesh so that the people could see, hear, learn, watch the miraculous works of God. He became like man so that he could experience all that we go through for the very reason he could say "I have been though all you have been through".  Jesus led by example just as we should do and shared the message the  he is the way the truth and the life!

Sacrifice himself: Jesus' message that we are taught daily is "IT"S NOT ABOUT ME"! Jesus always taught put others first jsut as he did for us.

Abundant life: Jeusus once our personal savior brings us to be children of God, Gives us eternal life and an heir to his throne. The Lord says in his word "

The kindgom of God: Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is here within us when we are saved for the spirit of God lives in us!

What an awesome God we serve!!!!

"Which of these purposes do you believe Jesus accomplished?"
I think Jesus accomplished the purpose of giving me life to live abundantly.  Despite the everyday struggles, and hills we think we can't get over, we are blessed everyday by the abundance of love and faith he has given us, and we need to pass it on to others.

How does being forgiven increase ones love for God? Note: According to Jesus, God`s forgiveness is motivated by love.

Because true forgiveness & Love can only be achieved by walking closer with Jesus and knowing him more- Knowing him more we gain knowledge and understanding, our hearts, minds and character are conformed in his Likness. So when man is able to understand the ways of the Lord he can appreciate it more. Man is cruel, harheated and unforgiving; easily angered and quick to hold a grudge & bitterness.  These are not the ways of the Lord so when we come into relationship with the father and see how willing he is to forgive us of all our wrong doing &  sins we couldn't be more, thankful,honored & grateful that God could do that because we can't. We are not capable to love or forgive like God does, that's why we need him & need to be in constant relationship with him so we can become more & more like him everyday!!!!! I've experienced that love & forgiveness and knowing how hard that is for me to do for others who have hurt me deeply truly makes me realize who I am & who God is and I am a sinner saved by grace who needs much of God everyday and if I don't feed myself with the Lord then I can quickly allow my fleshto take control of my old ways full of un- kindness, lackin gentless and self control making it all about me- So how do I love God more because he forgives me? Because only he loves me enough never to give up on me, never to turn his back on me and say no i don't want to forgive you I've heard all of this before. Because he Loves me so much tht he will never stop pushing me to be all that he created me to be! That my friends is a love you will never find outside of Jesus, That is a love that will leave you speechless, at a loss for words and left unable to describe at times his wonderous forgiveness & grace!!

"According to Jesus, what does it mean to be loved by God?"
A new life, Life everlasting, acceptance, forgiveness, wholeness, a faithful friend with unconditional love, someone who will never leave nor forsake you. A life of fruitfulness and abundance, a life of goodness and blessing. In order to receive this love you must make him your personal savior. You must live in obedience and strive to be as he is and though the Lord knows you are not perfect, for it’s that very Love that will help you to brush the dirt off your feet and keep your on the right path! He loves us and wants us all to make it into the kingdom of heaven but narrow is the road says the Lord for he knows it is not easy and does call for daily sacrifice of ourselves. It requires for us to love God more than ourselves so that we can do his perfect will!
