Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God? According to the scriptures,God had planned this so as to bring us into the reality of how painful our sins are and the cost it takes.Jesus' death shows that all our sins have been paid on the cross and this brings us to eternal life.
