Why did Jesus tell the rich man to sell all his possessions before coming to follow Him?

It was due to his rich, He knew that man valued his wealth so much than God so the wealth was hindering him to see the Kingdom of God.

Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

As per His death it proved that blood shed on the cross was for both physical and spiritual, more so when He says "My God why have you left me" He is crying for both physical and spiritual separation
