King Herod had a lot of respect for the intergrity of John the Baptist and he secretely feared every word that he spoke. However, owing to pride brought about by his post of ruler over that area, he succumbed to pressure from his wife Herodias and ordered the death of John the Baptist.

How did Jesus "equip" his disciples for powerful work by taking away their material possessions? Jesus wanted the disciples to trust in God's care rather than in their own resources and had told them that they had been given power over all evil spirits as they embarked on their mission. They had an advantage of going out in two as they would encourage one another when they face adversity during their mission.

Jesus could not do a mighty work in his own town among relatives because of disbelief. What is disbelief? I would put disbelief as a careless way of refusing to accept that Jesus was the true son of God who had been send to redeem them. They lacked appreciation in all respects whatsoever towards Him.
