They expected him to have freed himself from his tormentors and maybe to have performed a great miracle to save himself from crucifixion. They did not understand his mission of saving the world from its sin by dying on that cross.

Why did the multitude want Barabbas released rather than Jesus? The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas to be released and have Jesus executed. All this happened to fulfill the mission of Jesus as written in the scriptures.
