Jesus is the word, and the word brings light to the people who believe it. When people live in sin, they are in darkness. They can only see light by hearing the word of God and believe it and turn from their evil doing by confessing, repentance and baptism.

Why was it important for Jesus to go through a time of temptation? Because as the first born he was to pass through what we pass, so that he could pioneer what is to make us perfect sons of God.

How did (does) repenting prepare someone for the Kingdom of God? God is holy and so is His Kingdom, and therefore those who are to enter His Kingdom must be holy. They can only be holy by repenting of their sins and be cleansed. Therefore repenting is request by sinners to be forgiven of their sins and hence a preparation for the Kingdom of God.
