Why does Jesus tell the growing crowd that one must be willing to renounce everything, including one`s own life, to be Jesus` follower?
Jesus spoke this teaching to get the crowds to think through their enthusiasm for him. He encouraged those who were superficial either to go deeper or to turn back. Following Christ means total submission to him and perhaps even to the point of death.

How does the host respond when people reject his dinner invitation in order to pursue their possessions and relationships?
He was very disappointed with them as they all turned down his invitation to the banquet because the timing was inconvenient to them.  We too can resist or delay responding to God's invitation, and our excuses may sound reasonable - work duties, family responsibilities, financial needs, or whatever they may be. Remember; God's invitation is the most important event in our lives, no matter how inconveniently it may be timed.

What does Jesus mean that "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted"?
Jesus advised people not to rush for the best places at a feast. People today are just asĀ eager to raise their social status, whether by being with the right people, dressing for success, or driving the right car. Whom do you try to impress? Rather than aiming for prestige, look for a place where you can serve. If God wants you to serve on a wider scale, he will invite you to take a higher place.
