I look at this in the context of 'Leadership' and 'Vulnerability". In terms of Leadership, the three had the biggest potential. Peter was the most dynamic. James and John though brothers, were sons of thunder-literally meaning they were powerful orators, besides, James was the eldest in that group of 12 in terms of age. The three, being not just disciples, but close friends, were being groomed for top leadership. Being vulnerable by their character, they needed to get the facts straight, about Jesus being the son of God, or in the same cause with Moses and Elijah. This was a formideable opportunity to look at Jesus,(new testament) as the fulfilment of the Law (Moses) and the Prophets, (Elijah). Vulnerable leaders could easily abandon the ministry, unless they are rooted, and Jesus had this in his will, purpose and vision. He knew his trial and death would be a difficult time ahead for vthose disciples, and hec was preparing them to know there was ressurrection in him, after death.
