 | Jesus was commited to sacrifice his own life. What did he mean by the statement, "For who ever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel will save it"? |
Jesus had a real burden in his heart to open up the mysteries of life after death, to his disciples who would continue with the gospel after him. The cause for which Jesus and the Gospel stool are unified here, ie, eternal life after life here on earth. To Jesus, Death was a means, not an end, and fear of it was absolutely not called for. Fear came from the devil, and that was why Peter was rebuked. Finally, I believe Jesus wanted the disciples to get it straight that it was him, and not the chief priests, the scribes or the pharisees who had the authority over life and death. When he said,"whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel will save it', was meant to encourage the disciples, to be bold and hold onto the faith, even in the face of death.
