According to Jesus, what does it mean to be loved by God?

To be loved by God, is a thing that is unbelievable as we are sinners men. He had forgive us from all our sins and has accept us as his children, is a proof of his Great Love. He recomfort us, and we do not have to be afraid of the world because i know he will stand by me everytime. He is our Eternal Father and we are his beloved children and he gives us Eternal life.

Why did Jesus? penalty for sin need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

I think he had to suffer physically and emotionally as he wanted to take all sufferings that people go through on earth so that we can be healed in his actions. Also, as he came to earth like a human being, he had to go through human sufferings to make us see that he has gone through all this before us. Through these sufferings, whenever we complain and suffer about an illness or whatever, we will always remember that he has gone through them all even if he didn`t deserve it.

Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)

I don`t think he was trying to incite his death. It was God`s plans anyway that his Son would die for us and he would do so to forgive us from our sins. I think what he did in the temple was because he was fed up of seeing people acting like they did. Even if he didn`t act like this, he would die the same way on the cross
