How did Joseph know it was a real angel appearing to him in his dreams, and not just , for example, indigestion? Joseph is experienced in dreams since he once received his message of taking Mary for a wife from the dream.
Joseph has faith in the God of his fathers who used dreams to communicate to his people.

Why did Herod try to kill Jesus? One reason is that he feared being overthrown as a power hungry person as portrayed in the current political suituation in many nations.
The other reason is that it has to happen to fulfill the prophecy of the prophets who said the prophet would live in Egypt.
