Why did the multitude want Barabbas released rather than Jesus? They were persuaded by the chief priest to have barabas set free and Jesus destroyed. And since their hearts were hardened and envied Jesus and also accused him of blashemy they would have rather had him killed and have a thief set free. As for the chief priests and they elders they persuaded the crowd to have Jesus destroyed because they envied him greatly and were terified that he might gain more favour from the people and have more power over the people than he did. Jesus was making the people believe in him instead of their teachings an to them he was not God and so it was better to get rid of him before he caused more problems.
