He wanted to get the disciples to understand that everything is possible with God and that they needed to have faith in him. He is always there to provide for us and will never let us down.. He also did it because he had compassion over the people and so he used this as an opportunity to show God's power and so that his name would be glorified..

Why did Jesus repeat this miracle, here feeding the 4000, after previously feeding the 5000? Jesus did so because he was showing love and compasion. By doing so it showed that no matter how little there is to feed on God is still in control, by him doing this everyone now knew that Jesus is truly the son of God.
