Why did the multitude want Barabbas released rather than Jesus?

BECAUSE THE CHIEF PREST AND THE ELDERS TOLD THE PEOPLE THEY HAVE TO ASKED FOR BARRABAS. BECAUSE THE ECHIEF PRUEST AND ELDERS WERE SCARE THAT JESUS WOULD SHOW THE WORLD HOW FALSE AND FULL OF SIN THEY WERE.

Why did the multitude want Barabbas released rather than Jesus?

Probably due to lack of faith/belief, not knowing the scriptures and being loyal and follower of the high priest Caiaphus. They were more loyal to Caiaphus than to God because they thought Caiaphus looked out for them;took care of them. This was also a common uneducated group heavily influenced by the educated Pharisees so it was more a situation of 'follower the leader'. I am sure envy played its part since most people only saw Jesus as a common man such as the people in His home town. They saw someone who did wonderful miracles yes but they couldnt understand how someone who seem to be of their making could do such things. They were very blind and without faith

Why did the multitude want Barabbas released rather than Jesus?

The Jewish leaders (leading priests and elders) wanted Jesus dead ; see Matthew 26 v 4 and Matthew 26 v 57-67. It goes on in Matt 27 v 20 where the Jewish leaders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabas' release and for JESUS to be put to death.
