Why was it important for Jesus to go through a time of temptation?

Jesus was required to experience all the temptation that man is bombarded with, just as Adam was tempted. Jesus, however, was not influenced like Adam was- Jesus resisted, and defeated satan, and eventually defeated sin and death.

How is Jesus coming into Galilee like light coming into a dark place? What is there about Jesus teaching that is like light?

Jesus came speaking the word of God, exposing sin, revealing the way to God,and speaking of kingdom truths - just as a light exposes all that which is hidden in the darkness, showing things as they really are. Also just as light from the sun causes growth and life in plants, so too does the Word of God give growth and life to our souls. Light also has a bleaching effect by disinfecting, so too does Jesus in our lives, where theres is evil, sin and decay. Where there is light there is also warmth - with Jesus in our hearts, there is love and warmth.

How did Joseph know it was a real angel appearing to him in his dreams, and not just , for example, indigestion?

Joseph was a man of faith. He understood and believed the scriptures, and he knew who the child was. The dream and the angel, confirmed that which he sensed in his spirit, and that which he understood about Herod and his son. Joseph recognised that the warning was coming from God, as he himself walked with God.
