He was showing them to have love to the people that they were to teach the word of God and to show it by taking care of spiritual and physical being of the human body. He new he was going to provide things through multiplication. He wanted the disciples to know that they had all the bread for the 5000 men including the uncounted women and children. The bible tells us our God provides all things according to our needs so Jesus wanted the disciples to know that they are the ones who had from God for they were having God everyday with them.

Why did Jesus challenge the disciples to "give them (5000 people) something to eat" before multiplying the food? He wanted to test their faith and to see if they had already forgotten the miracles Jesus had already done. Their thinking was still limited to human power because according to the feeding the multitude was impossible so he wanted to show them that nothing is impossible with God.
