How did peter know that it was elijah and moses who appeared to Jesus during the transfiguration?

Why did Jesus take just Peter, James and John with Him to witness his transfiguration? The first time a voice from heaven spoke the disciples were not there. And so to increase their faith and to also make them believe and understand who Jesus really was and understand what he came to earth to do, he took his three most trusted disciples to witness this.
