"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)

Jesus was to fulfil prophesy so he knew what was happening. When praying in the Garden of Gethseman he asked God to take away the cup of suffering but also talked of the will of God to be done. So whatever he was doing was in line with the will of God.

Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

This is because as human beings we experience physical and emotional pain. By suffering and dying he represented us. He came to earth as a human being and had to experience life as a human being. This was testimony enough to us.By overcoming death he proved that even us we shall resurrect.
