I think Jesus was trying to let His disciples to understand Him better that everything is possible with Him.He also wanted them to learn that He is the true Son of God and god Himself thus He is the provider.So there is no food that can be found else where more than being closer to Him.As such the more we are closer to Him the more our needs will be met with.

How come the unbelief of His countrymen prevented Jesus from performing many mighty works among them? When Jesus started teaching his countrymen,they started to question his wisdom without letting Him time for anything.His country men thought they knew Him by attributing Him to the carpenters son whereas there was something greater than just being a carpenters son.Thus preventing Jesus from performing many mighty works among them.

Why did God allow John to be beheaded by Herod? Given that John the Baptist was a menssenger as we read in the Scriptures,I think that God allowed John to be beheaded because he had finished his mission of preparing a way for the Messiah.
