According to Luke, what did the angel Gabriel predict as the future role of John the Baptist? He will neither drink wine nor strong drink, will be filled with the Holy Spirit and turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God? To let all mankind know that He has also gone through human suffering and emotional changes and so He best understands our plights as human beings. Moreover, everything that Jesus went through was for our spiritual salvation and benefit as Christians.
