What made Peter so afraid to be identified with Jesus? Why are many people today still afraid to identify with Jesus?

Peter was afraid because he thought by identifying with Jesus he would be arrested too.  He wasn't ready to go through the torture and the pain Jesus went through.

Many people are still afraid to identify with Jesus today because they would not like to go through what Jesus went through at the hands of his detractors.    Some Christians are facing imprinsonment, death sentences etc. in some countries today, as a result, many are running away from Christ and following the crowd.

Lesson
Jesus is truly the son of God and through Him we are reconciled with God.He left His glory to die for us and that is an unconditional(Agape) love and I have learn to love others with this kind of love Christ showed towards us.

Why did the high priest view it as blasphemy when Jesus acknowledged that he was the Christ, the Son of God?
The Jews believed that there is only one true God and that nobody could equate himself with Him not even Moses.  They didn't believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah and they didn't believe that he is the Son of God.  They didn't believe that a carpenter's son born by a woman could boldly claim to be anything near God   therefore, the High priest thought it as blasphemy for Jesus to acknowledge that he was the Son of God.
