The priests, scribes, elders did not answer because they knew very well source of Jesus power.  Answering, therefore, would make them fall into that same trap they set for Jesus.

Jesus stated that the primary purpose of the temple is for prayer. It is still being used for prayer today, however, as in the days of old people it has been turned  into a place of commercial activities, social gathering etc.  Many just go in there to look for life partners and not because of salvation.
