Jesus proved to John that he was the Messiah by drawing his attention to the miracles he performed.  His own people of Nazareth rejected him because of their unbelief and hard-heartedness,  therefore he was unable to perform any miracle there because according to Jesus a prophet is not accepted in his own home.  As a result John sent his disciples to Jesus to verify whether he was actually the Messiah or they should expect another.
