Man sinned from the beginning and was cursed by God both physically and spiritually.  Jesus having come in the form of man had to go through what mankind was going through as a result of the curse. By going through the physical and emotional pain it meant that we are free from the curse and that there would be no more animal sacrifices for the atonement of our sins.  There is no separation between us and God.  We can now approach Him through prayer without any barrier.
