Herod was trying to protect his domain, his kingship. As he heard of a new king being born, what will be the action of that king, he thaught, the king is coming to fight him and take the kingdom from him. Herold did not understand the purpose of Christ on earth, and so wanted to kill him to be able to preserve his thrown for his desendants. but Christs main reason on earth was to save us from sins.
