Why did Jesus invest so much in Peter even though He knew that Peter would deny Him? When Jesus first called Peter, a fisherman, he (Jesus) told him you will now be a fisher of men. So Jesus had already chosen Peter as a soul winner. As one who knew the future,he also knew Peter would deny him, however, he was aware of our weaknesses. That as human beings when confronted with big temptation - as in his case - we could not stand it. Jesus had confidence in Peter that no matter what he would come back to him. Jesus was not wrong Peter did come back to him through repentance and he actually fished for men into the kingdom.
