Jesus was commited to sacrifice his own life. What did he mean by the statement, "For who ever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel will save it"?

Jesus new that he was going to make a great sacrifice that would save mankind.He also wanted people to make the right choices in life, which of course had to be in line with sciptural tenants. This scarifice for the things of the kingdome was what really mattered to the christian race. And this was why Christ felt that we should be willing to lose our lives for the sake of the gospel, not because our lives are useless but because nothing-not even life itself-can compare to what we gain in kingdom works for God. Jesus wants us to come to God through him rather than to lead a life of sin , vanity and self-satisfaction. He wants us to stop taking control of our destiny. God knows us better than we know ourselves.
