Why did Jesus speak to the people in parables, rather than just stating things directly?
Jesus spoke to the people in parables rather than just stating things directly because he wanted people to understand better with comparable real examples. To open their mind with easy examples, he knew they were not spiritual, they need to be taught as children.

What does the darnel seed represent and how is this darnel weed sown?
The darnel seed represents the evil in all its manifestations, through bad people, through an evil culture or education, both growing parallel. The wheat represents the good people:"christians". The darnel seed, the evil. At the end darnel weeds or ungodly or evil people, will be thrown to fire. Ungodly and godly people grow together. The godly ones with their example might be the light and the true for the ungodly to become converted. If they do not convert, they will go to hell, to the fire of everlasting fire of hell, where the demon and its angels live.

What type of soil best represents your life? Why?
Probably the good soil because I try to be anchore in God's word, but not yielding 100% of fruit, I think less. Trying to do the good battle, being a good warrior, but with my vulnarable points and things I have not yet overcome.
