I guess that the suffering or punishment that is linked to one's behavior is eternal damnation or to be cut off completely from the others.

What "division" did Jesus intend to bring between people? I believe that the division Jesus is talking about among family members is that of their belief. Some members are all for Jesus while others don't believe in Jesus or the Bible or the Church. And Jesus cannot accept someone that does not believe in Him into His Kingdom.

Why does Jesus describe to his disciples how disobedient, ignorant and lazy servants are punished by their master, and how obedient, alert and active servants are given greater authority? Jesus probably told that to His disciples so that they can be alert to His words & spread His words to everyone that they may know the rewards & consequences of being a faithful or unfaithful servant. So by the time we reach to our destination, we cannot say that we didn't know.
