I beleive if I recall correctly JESUS mentions to his disciples that he needs to fulfill his destiny in order for them to receive the blessings of the Holy Spirit. Without this sacrifice, I'm not sure the Holy Spirit would be available to help us towards the path of salvation.

"The Bible tells us that we need to be led by the Holy Spirit (see for example Romans 8:12-14 and Galatians 5:16-25).
