Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God? Jesus was taking on the sins of all mankind. In order to complete the mission, he needed to feel the wrath that mankind deserved. In other words, he recieved the wrath (or consequences) along with the deeds.
