What made Peter so afraid to be identified with Jesus? Why are many people today still afraid to identify with Jesus?

FEAR! A lot of people in this world don't identify with Jesus because what Jesus taught and still teaches is diametrcally opposed to the way things are done in this world.

Today a lot of folks are self absorbed and don't think about no one but themselves and the word of God teaches the exact opposite.

Since Jesus knew that He was to be crucified, why did He not just avoid trouble by leaving town?
Jesus divine faith in God the Father had surpassed His fear of death, He knew that He had a mission to fullfill, die for sins

Peter was afraid to be associated with Jesus because he did not want to be identified with someone who, in society, was considered a criminal and outcast.  Today many people are afraid to identifiy with Jesus because Christianity is not necessarily the "in" thing to be involved in.  Many people, today as well as in Jesus's time, conform to the standards and accepted behavior of the natural world instead of being guided by Biblical principles and the example of Jesus Christ.
