Jesus' death impressed the centurian so mach that he realized Jesus was the Son of God by: watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared exceedingly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God.", by the scene that happened right there when Jesus breathed His last breath.

Why did those who passed by mock Jesus?

Those who passed by mocked Jesus because they didn't believe He was God; for He still hangging up there on the wood and couldn't save Himself that's what the passers-by thought.

Why did the soldiers mock Jesus?

The soldiers mocked Jesus because they didn't know Who He was and just thought He was just an ordinary guy trying to call himself the king. In His heart He forgave them for they didn't know what they were doing.
