He asked God to forgive them, as they don't know what they were doing. Also in Jesus' Ministry he always favored the poor and helped out the sinners.

How can one find spiritual blessing by going through mourning, suffering, hunger or poverty? Jesus came down to the earth and led by example, He carried HIs cross to be crucified for our sake. If we follow Jesus example, and carry our own cross via mourning suffering, hunger etc., we will receive a reward in heaven.
