The Pharisees and scribes could not find it in their hearts to forgive but and this is why JESUS' teachings were so radical and welcomed for that matter. What made Jesus` teaching so attactive to tax collectors and prostitutes? They knew that what they were doing was wrong and by listening to and following Jesus's teachings, they had a chance to change and take a better path in life.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted? To find out what they truly believed and as a test of their faith. Their faith in God would have to be sincere or they would not have believed in his power from heaven.
