Starting fresh and clean we are able to recieve the Holy spirit and the word of God. In Jesus's day there was a lot of rabbinical legelism and traditions that where made more important than God's word. We today must watch out for the same thing in our churchs.

Why did Jesus choose Matthew, a known taxgatherer and a despised man, to be His disciple? Jesus chose the tax collector, who was considered a big sinner, to follow him to show that no matter how big your sins are we can all be forgiven if we follow Him. Jesus came so that sinners may be forgiven.
