If you were Mark, writing a short report to demonstrate to a Roman audience that Jesus (a Jewish man) was "the Son of God", what would you include in that report?

If I were Mark, I would first consider the audience that I would be addressing.

From the beginning of time, God made everyone unique and He formed each person as an individual. Yet humans band together as groups, as nationalities and as countries. Each group of people is different and there are different ways of approaching them in order for the audience to best hear the good news of Jesus.

If I were a Roman national, trying to convince the powerful Romans that a Jewish man was the son of God, I would have to go about it in a different way than if I were approaching the Jews. The Romans would be hesitant to accept a man of a different nationality as ruler over all men on earth. If I approach them, talking about the lessons that Jesus had taught and about His lineage, they would reject it automatically out of prejudice. However, if I spoke more about His actions and the amazing things that Jesus did as a man walking on the earth, they might pay attention. The Romans are men of action and crave power. They cannot deny what is tangible and what is fact. Therefore, I would focus on all of the miracles that Jesus performed. I would tell them how He traveled across the lands healing the sick and saving those who were lost. If you focus on the great deeds that a single man has accomplished, the Romans might pay attention and hold that man in higher esteem.

Then once the Romans were more malleable and open to the idea that Jesus was a great man, I would start approaching them and teaching them about the spoken words and lessons that Jesus taught.

Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

This is very powerful because in these events everything Jesus stated came true before the eyes of many.  Love your Enemies- Jesus prays for his executioners.  Those who believe will be saved - Jesus tells the theif "Assuredly I tell you today you will be with me in paradise"

The physical punishment represents the sins we commit against God and Jesus, People needed to see what we do when we sin and to see the severity of our sins.

When Jesus cries out Father, Father why have you forsaken me"  He is also showing us the spiritual separation that sin creates between God and us his people.  it is said that the spirit of God left Jesus because of all the sins (Our Sins) that were being placed upon him.

Jesus says "It is Finished"  That is the completion of his sacrifice.  then the sky darkens and there is an earthquake.  The temple veil splits in half showing the completion and that because of Jesus there is no barrier between the father God and his people who believe what Jesus lived and died for.

Then Jesus' innocence is recognized by a roman soldier "Certainly this was a righteous man!"
