Jesus was commited to sacrifice his own life. What did he mean by the statement, "For who ever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel will save it"?
Our lives belong to God. Thats the point of total surrender, when we can give our lives to god and for the sake of our brothers and Christ gave his life for us. Finding the sacrifice of serving god to the end is indeed realising the riches of his kingdom lies in Heaven and not on earth, so by denying ourselves and taking up our cross and follow Christ, we die daily and we surrender to the will of God and this sometimes will lead to physical death. Jesus wants us to love and serve even to the point of death, he did it on the cross, so did the apostles and millions of beleivers.

What was Jesus trying to teach the disciples? Note: Jesus left twelve baskets full when he fed the 5000 people on the Israel side (Israel had 12 main regions or tribes).
Jesus was trying to teach his disciples to believe in him and trust in him. With God all things are possible if we only believe in his word.  He proved this when he fed the 5000 peole on the Israel side and still left twelve baskets full.  What a Mighty God he is to all of us.

The Bread of Life was enough for the children of Israel, in fact it was so much more the gentile community could now benefit. The bread of the Pharisees and of Herod is the false teachings or traditions of men which Jesus foreknew was going to make its way into the Good News with attempts to pervert the gospel.
