Why did JesusĀ“ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Jesus life was an example of what believers would have to endure on our walk with him.  Jesus dies for our sins. 2 Corinthians 5:21. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made righteousness of God in him.”

The suffering Jesus underwent speaks more of the hatred and cruelty of humanity than it does of God's punishment for sin.  Satan’s absolute hatred of God and Jesus was surely a part of the motivation behind the relentless torture and abuse. Jesus' suffering is the ultimate example of how sinful man feels toward a holy God.  It was our sins that made Him cried out “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

In the Old Testament we read Isaiah 53:3,5 especially predict Jesus’ suffering, “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed.” This was all because of God love for the world.

JESUS AND ME

I think this can apply to everyday life. We all face our own personal storms in our walk we God. We also cry out "Save us, Lord! We are dying!"

God already know whats coming, all we need to do is have faith, then we will have peace that passes all understanding.
