Jesus calls this a "New Commandment" because like the previous commandment which calls us to love our neighbors as we love ourself, we are being called to love each other as Christ loves us. If we learn to love one another as Christ loves us, then we will be able to live in peace with all mankind. We will truly come to understand what it means to be our brother's keeper.

Jesus through his teachings, lifestyle, and examples demonstrated this new commandment by living and spreading the Good News among the poor, outcasts, sinners(anawim) while on earth. His ultimate demonstration of this commandment, was his acceptance of his cruel, humilating trial, crucifixion and death on the cross. It is because of this great sacrifice that we must accept this command and try to live it in our daily lives.
