Why were the chief priests and scribes angry, what was it that Jesus said?
Because they knew they were criticized by Jesus. Jesus told the parable to indicate that God were as if the lord of the vineyard, the country and the people were like the vineyard, the chief priests and scribes the farmers of the vineyard, the prophets the servant of the lord, and Jesus was the son of the lord. Jesus criticized the chief priests and scribes that they didn't respect messengers sent by God, nor did they respect the Son of God, and even they conceived to kill the Son. Deeply in their minds, they had no faith in God although they seemed to. And Jesus told them, if they kept going on this road, they would be destroyed by God. The chief priests and scribes were scared and irritated.

Why do you think the priests, scribes, elders did not answer Jesus?

I think it was because they knew their doing proceeded from themselves instead of God. They were trying to accuse Jesus for his purpose of himself. But Jesus' question reminded them of their darkness and selfishness. In either way they answered Jesus would convict themselves. I think that was why they didn't answer Jesus.
