The tax collector is humble and commits his sins and begs the Lord to pardon him. He knows he has nothing to be regarded as good in front of the Lord. What he can ask from the Lord is only forgiveness instead of any compliments. And this is what the Pharasee seems to lack.

What characteristics of a little child allow the child to better receive the Kingdom of God? Little children believe in God unconditionally and doubtlessly and fully. They simply trust God based on God words. They are pure in heart and completely accept God. Their pure and open hearts allow them better receive the Kingdom of God.

What does Jesus mean that "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted"? It means we have no qualifications to be proud since we are finite. Father God is all-mighty while He is not proud or vain, how can we, human beings, to be so? We shoud be humble as the Lord Jesus has shown us. Humble people are highly valued by God and are exalted. And proud people will be reminded or teached by the Lord to know that vanity is hated by God and they have to be humble.
