If you were Mark, writing a short report to demonstrate to a Roman audience that Jesus (a Jewish man) was "the Son of God", what would you include in that report?
Since the Rome audience were interested in power instead of the Messiah,  a man with the supreme power would be better accepted and thought of. The man's genealogy and thoughts would not be paid too much attention. Hence, to the Roman audience, I would include Jesus' incredible miracles to show how powerful He was to a degree that no other man could compare and to show that He was just "the Son of God" who created and managed the universe and who had the supreme power.

Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?
Because our sins separate us from God not only spiritually but also physically. Once our ancestors - Adam and Eve - were driven out of the Garden of Eden, we have been separated from God entirely. If Jesus wants to reconciliate human beings with God, his penalty must include all pains produced by our sins so that he can save the whole of each of us. Moreover, on the Last Day, dead bodies will be raised, that is, our bodies will be redempted, and the raised is imperishable. If Jesus panalty for sin didn't include physical pain, our bodies would no way be resurrected. What a disaster that would be!

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)
I think not Jesus incited to his death but perhaps he incited the time of his death. He would die as the prophecy had foretold and he would fulfill the prophecy in the grace of God and to save us. Far before the very day he was crucified, people who were against him had tried to kill him. But only on that Friday he was finally killed and before that there was the preparation and after that there was resurrection, when it was Sunday, the first day of the week, on which God had created light, and as Jesus told us, he is the Light.
