Why did Jesus“ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

I think that many times we can seperate the "spiritual" world from the physical world, thinking of them as two different, seperate things. Yet, Scripture tells us that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

We can forget that we fight and struggle against those things that we cannot see. We have a spiritual soul INSIDE our our earthly, fleshly body. We are not seperated from our carnal, fleshly body. Sin reigns in our body and must be put to death.

When we look at Adam and Eve, they were to live forever in the Garden. However, after they sinned, it brought death into their bodies. Yet, this cancerous black death was still taking force, and the early descendants of Adam lived for quite a long time. But then after that, you see his descendants living for a shorter and shorter time.

Before Jesus, the result of sin was the sacrifice of various animals in order to atone for our sin. The animals blood was symbolic of it's life coursing throughout it. It's body was killed in order to pay the penalty of our sin. It's blood was used to cleanse us and purify us from our wrong actions.
I think that God certainly knows our frail and corrupted our bodies our. That is another reason God came down in the form of a Man. As a man, He fully experienced all of the physical emotions that we can experience in our lives. The book of Hebrews says that because of this, we do not have a great high priest who is unable to symphatize with our weaknesses. Nay, we have one who is perfectly able to understand all that we go through. How wonderful!

This mortal body of sin must be killed. Scripture says that when Christ was crucified, we, as believers were crucified with Him. It was our sin that held Him there on that Cross. And then, the best part happened! After being buried, He rose again on the third day! So, we too, have been risen with Christ and given new life with Him! Halelujah!

The emotional pain is neccessary in any believer as well. True repentance from sins should bring emotional pain. It should grieve our hearts for those things which we have done. Jesus suffered and died because of our sins. We should not make lightly of the holiness of God and the blackness of sin. Repentance brings sorrow and a turning from our present course to the new one of following God and His life giving precepts.

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)

This is my 4th time trying to type up my answer. (I suppose my previous ones were too long, and it logged me out.)

Anyways though, we must remember that Jesus was God incarnate. Him and the Father were one. He was in complete control over every situation. He was not surprised at anything.

He allowed everything to happen to Him in order to both fufill the many prophecies that had been written concerning him, as well as to show those around him His glory and thereby, hopefully have them put their trust in Him.

Though yes, he was really hard on the temple leaders, it was neccessary to break through their pride and many calloused layers. You can see in John 8, as He is telling them that He is the light of the world, they are refusing to believe Him. Their whole world is being rocked by what He is saying, and for that, they hate Him.

Jesus never did fit OUR expectations. But then again, His ways are so much higher than our ways. He uses the foolish things of this world in order to humble the proud.
