The rich people suffers from false ego, attachment for worldly treasures and leisures which becomes very hard and impossible to give up. He is always shaky about the kingdom of God. He believes in today and lives in present. He thinks that he will never die.

What is in the heart of the tax collector (rejected by society) that the Pharasee (religious leader) seems to lack? Humility and repentence. He asked for forgiveness for his sins whereas the Pharasee was suffering from wrong notions as if he is a righteous person and does not need to ask for forgiveness.
