What did Mary understand about who was in her womb before the birth of Jesus?
Mary understood that she was carrying someone very special and unique who was not only the son of God but was also God himself. She knew that what the angel had told her was true. She was carrying the Christ and messiah of the world. She also remembered that this was a fulfilment of the promise made to Abraham.

Life Summaries of Jesus - Lesson 101
Answers:

Prophet Isiah predicted that Messiah will born to redeem the mankind.  Jesus was conceived by the power of Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlahem in 6 BC.  He was assisting His parents in Nazareth and lived a traditional Jewish life.

Jesus began his public teaching in Jordan, Samaria and Jerico and performed many miracles, the first one is changing the water in to wine in a wedding at Cana.

The number of His followers increased manifold by seeing miraculous events. Only a few months later in that same city of Jerusalem one record states that some 3000 new followers were added in a single day. Jesus’ reputation spread all over the nation and the Roman Emperors worried by witnessing this. The religious leaders responded by trying to stomp out Jesus' followers. Many of these people chose to die rather than deny their belief that Jesus was truly God.

Jesus preached on the Kingdom of God, Love, Humility, Value of Human, Forgiveness and the Eternal Life.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate was crucified and died on the Cross.

However, according to more than 500 witnesses, Jesus returned from the dead after three days.  The next 40 days He journeyed in both the southern and northern provinces of Israel. On the Way to Emmaus, He dialogued with the Passers-by and made known to them that He is Jesus.  To many, this was conclusive proof that Jesus' claims to be God were real. Then Jesus returned to Jerusalem, the city where he was recently executed, and according to witnesses, he left the earth alive by rising up into the sky. Jesus' followers reported and recorded his live appearances throughout forty days after his execution
