What was Jesus trying to teach the disciples? Note: Jesus left twelve baskets full when he fed the 5000 people on the Israel side (Israel had 12 main regions or tribes).
Jesus is trying to tell them that they should have full faith in God and his son Jesus who can feed any number of people. If the man does not have anything with him, God will provide the same sooner or later.

Why did JesusĀ“ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

Jesus was certainly the son of God and righteousman.  Only Great Spiritual man dear to the God can tolerate the punishment for others and can never be enimical to the persons who tortured him. He requested the God to forgive them.  He surrendered himself to the God spiritually and offered himself to the humanity bodily to serve the mankind specially needy, downtrodden, poor and to reform the sin doers.

"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)
No he was not inciting his death.  He was simply pursuing the religious leaders not to expoit the general public in the name of religion and superstitions. He preached to them that the God is one and almighty and he always helps the poor people, needy, exploited ones, deserted, neglected and even sinners interested in giving up sins. Since it was not acceptable to the religious leaders as their existence was stake, they opposed Jesus tooth and nail and got him tortured, punished and crucified.
