Jesus was commited to sacrifice his own life. What did he mean by the statement, "For who ever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel will save it"?

I understand it this way[ Never thought about it] It was preplanned that Jesus will come down on earth and take up punishment that is due to mankind. He accepted accursed deathand hewas buried and resurrected. When we accept and acknowledge Jesus as God and obey His commandments, we must die to our flesh. The flesh wars against the spirit and viceversa. So to get redemption, we must die to self. . Can someone say if it is correct?

It is because He was pleading to Father God on our behalf.
